What is advance ship notice (ASN)?
An advance ship notice (ASN) is an electronic message a supplier sends before a shipment arrives, listing its contents, packing and expected arrival. In EDI it is the 856 transaction, and many large customers require one with every shipment.
How it works
An ASN lets the receiving dock plan its labor and check in shipments by scanning carton labels instead of counting every item. Customers that require ASNs may issue a compliance chargeback when one is missing or doesn’t match the shipment.
Advance ship notice (ASN) example
An ASN goes out as 40 cartons leave the dock, and the customer’s receiving team scans the carton labels against it when the truck arrives.
